Want to become a better writer? Join our 30-Day Writing Challenge.
Words by Taylor Meek
Writing takes skill, and skills can be developed through practice. That’s why we’re running another 30-Day Writing Challenge to help you develop a writing practice that lasts.
For the month of April, you will be tasked with writing something new each day while developing important journalistic skills. If you have a busy schedule, don’t worry, we’ve crafted this challenge with you in mind. Everything is optional, but we do recommend completing all the challenges so you can make the most of the 30-day experience.
By joining the challenge through our Writers’ Collective, you will have access to journalism and advocacy courses, weekly events, pitching opportunities, and one-to-one mentoring with revered journalists, authors, and experts within the animal protection space.
Here is what a few previous participants had to say about the challenge:
“I feel so happy and accomplished reaching the end of the 30-day challenge. Doing this challenge was so fun for me and I even got into the groove of writing every day. I was able to notice a difference in my writing and it got better with each day. My favorite challenge was day 11 when I had to research a local nonprofit and I picked Fix Nation. It was fun to write about a wonderful non-profit program in my area. I have met so many wonderful people through this program and I’m happy that I completed it. Thank you to everyone for being so loving and supportive and I wish everyone the best!” — Alex Bernal
“The 30-day Challenge was excellent! It helped me a lot to push myself and forced me to put into practice some forms of writing for the first time. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to comply every day, but with what I was able to advance I did notice a greater fluency in writing as the days went by. I will surely try to keep writing as often as possible, trying to push myself to write in formats I’m not used to.” — Matilde Nuñez del Prado Alanes
” I have come to learn my strengths and weaknesses, what I enjoy writing (poetry and reported articles, surprisingly), and what I don’t (fiction). I have also been able to notice what has developed in my writing and what remains challenging. Having this portfolio – if I can call it that – has given me a physical reference of my state of mind, my priorities, my values, and the numerous ways I’ve learned to express myself and my views without ever losing my voice. Writing more (and consistently) has also helped me focus better, and allowed me to read more and for longer periods. This has become a very productive cycle because the more I read, the easier it is to write and vice versa.”—Maureen Medina
